Cervical Cancer Screening
Knocknacarra Medical Centre is a participating practice in the free nationwide cervical screening programme, CervicalCheck. Eligible women are advised to make an appointment for a smear test with our receptionist. You will have the choice of male or female smeartaker.
The National Cervical Screening Programme provides free smear tests to women aged 25 to 60. A smear test is a simple procedure that only takes minutes and is the most effective way to detect changes in the cells of the cervix.
CervicalCheck has developed a register (list) of eligible women nationwide aged 25 to 60 through up-to-date information received from the Department of Social and Family Affairs. Over the next three years, CervicalCheck will send an invitation by post to women on this list who have never had a free CervicalCheck smear test.
Who can have a free smear test?
From 1st September 2009, women who have never had a smear test will need a letter of invitation from CervicalCheck to have a free test. With an invitation letter, women can have a free smear test with any smeartaker (GP or Practice Nurse) that is registered with CervicalCheck. Over 4000 GP's, Women's Health, Family Planning and Well Woman Clinics all over Ireland are registered to take smear tests.
What if I have not had a smear test in the last three years?
Any woman that has not had a smear test in the last three years can opt-in and request an invitation letter from CervicalCheck by registering online, or by calling Freephone 1800 45 45 55.
