Rotavirus Vaccination

Rotavirus VaccinationThe rotavirus vaccine provides protection against the rotavirus which is found in the stool (faeces) of people who are infected. It can be spread by human contact or objects that have a tiny amount of stool on them, this can cause severe diarrhoea and vomiting. Rotavirus is a very common disease and almost all children are infected before they are 5 years old.

What are the symptoms of rotavirus

It affects mostly babies and young children and causes the following

  • Fever
  • Watery diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach Pain

The loss of bodily fluids can lead to dehydration which can be very harmful and may require admission to hospital for intravenous fluids (needle in the vein).

It's a liquid vaccine, ingested orally. Rotarix requires 2 vaccinations and can be given simultaneously with the other scheduled vaccines at 2 months and 4 months. The first dose should be given before the infant is 15 weeks old.

Benefits of vaccination

  • Prevents the infant falling ill from rotavirus infection with diarrhoea and vomiting which usually lasts for 3-8 days.
  • Prevents the serious complications of dehydration which may require treatment with intravenous fluids in hospital.
  • It does not protect against other causes of diarrhoea and vomiting.

Cost of vaccination

€80 per Rotarix Vaccine (2 vaccines required).
